On Wednesday, Michael Alfonso announced his candidacy for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional seat as current Rep. Tom Tiffany runs for Wisconsin Governor.
Alfonso, is the grandson of Cuban refugees and the son in law of former Wisconsin Representative and current U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Sean Duffy. Michael and his wife, Evita Duffy-Alfonso, currently live in Vilas county and have deep roots in northern Wisconsin.
Alfonso, paid his way through UW-Madison working long construction, and has now launched his Republican bid for the northern Wisconsin district. His campaign touts his “strong Wisconsin values” of “faith, community, hard work, hockey, and American patriotism.”
“I’m running for Congress because Northern Wisconsin needs to continue to have a representative who will truly put our families, communities, and America first,” Alfonso said in a statement shared first with Fox News Digital. The 7th Congressional District will now have 3 GOP candidates running for the seat. Alfonso joins Paul Wassgren and Jessi Ebben in the Republican race. They will face off in the primary election in August of 2026.
Alfonso argues his reason for running is “watching the American Dream slip away,” and has taken identity with Charlie Kirk’s ideals of believing that America is at a “turning point.” (RELATED: Poll Finds Increasing Blame on Democrats for Continued Shutdown)
“My grandparents’ decision to flee communist Cuba to ensure a better life for our family should not be in vain. The radical left wants to change this country to be what my grandfather, and many before and after him, fled their home countries to escape,” said Alfonso in a video on X.
The 7th Congressional District covers over 18,000 square miles of northwestern Wisconsin, and has served as a GOP stronghold since Duffy’s win in 2011. In 2019, Duffy resigned to return to his wife and family where his ninth child was having medical complications. In the special election, Tom Tiffany earned the 7th congressional seat. Tiffany was then reelected every year and recently in 2024, where he will retire to run for Wisconsin governor in 2026.
