Republicans in the Wisconsin Senate are now, officially, keeping a closer eye on Wisconsin’s attorney general.

Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu on Monday announced a new Special Committee on Oversight of the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

“The people of Wisconsin deserve transparency and accountability from every corner of their government,” LeMahieu said.

His vision is to have the State Senate look into the “statutory authority” of A-G Josh Kaul’s office, with a keen interest in whether Kaul is “serving the public interest,” and “not the agenda of third parties or outside organizations.”

That is a clear reference to the special assistant attorney general in Kaul’s office that is being paid for by the State Energy and Environmental Impact Center, which itself is funded by Michael Bloomberg.

That special A-G from the State Energy and Environmental Impact Center is at the center of a lawsuit from several dairy groups in the state. The dairy groups say it is unconstitutional and unlawful for Kaul to use a privately funded outside prosecutor to handle environmental cases that fit a national narrative. That case has yet to be settled.

State Sen. Mary Felzkowski, R-Tomahawk, will lead the Senate’s oversight committee. On Monday, she said the new committee will not be engaging in cheap political stunts.

“Wisconsinites deserve a Department of Justice that acts for them, not against them. Outside influence from highly self-interested sources is unacceptable, and the work of this committee over the coming months to determine what is actually happening at DOJ is very important,” Felzkowski said in a statement.

She added that the committee’s objective is “transparency.”

There is no word when the committee will hold its first hearing, but LeMahieu has given them a deadline of April of 2026 to deliver a report to his office.
