On Wednesday, Republican businessman Bill Berrien’s entry into the Wisconsin gubernatorial race Wednesday was met with immediate skepticism from grassroots conservatives, who pointed to his history of supporting Ranked Choice Voting and criticizing Donald Trump. Despite this, Berrien is positioning himself as a fiscal conservative challenger to Democratic Governor Tony Evers and his so-called ‘tax and spend’ policies.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Berrien expressed confidence in his ability to win the Governor’s race, a seat that Republicans have invested significant resources into winning back since Scott Walker was defeated in 2018.

“We [have] to get away from the six years of Tony Evers, where we’re going in the entirely opposite direction. This race is extremely winnable. I can win it. I can be the conservative governor that is going to make this the Wisconsin century.”

Berrien served as a Navy SEAL for nine years and is the CEO of Pindel Global Precision and Liberty Precision, machine shop and aerospace companies based out of Wisconsin. (RELATED: Bannon: Cut Federal Funds to UW-Madison Over Ties to CCP, ‘Woke’ Faculty)

While some voters and social media have indicated that they are impressed with Berrien’s personal background, others have expressed skepticism about his background, which includes backing Ranked Choice Voting in Wisconsin, a practice that many Republicans are concerned favors Democratic candidates.

Many have chalked up former Democrat Congresswoman Mary Peltola’s 2022 election victory, where she defeated former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, to second choice votes resulting from a Ranked Choice Voting scheme.

In addition to Berrien’s support for Ranked Choice Voting, grassroots conservative have expressed concerns about his past support for 2024 Presidential candidate Nikki Haley, who opposed President Donald Trump in the Republican primary and who Berrien donated $30,000 to.
