For the first time in nearly 30 years, the Teamsters union has opted not to endorse a candidate in the upcoming presidential election. The decision follows a member poll revealing overwhelming support for Donald Trump, who garnered 59.6% of the vote compared to Kamala Harris’ 34.0%.
The Teamsters, representing over 1.3 million workers across various industries, conducted an electronic member poll to gauge support for potential candidates.
The union’s decision comes just two days after a private meeting between Kamala Harris, Teamster leaders, and members. Despite the vice president’s efforts to secure their backing, she was ultimately unsuccessful in swaying the majority of the union’s members.
The union’s president, Sean O’Brien, had expressed frustration as early as September 1, noting that the Democratic National Committee (DNC) refused to let him speak at their convention, while also editing and censoring speeches from union members who were allowed to speak.
“We asked both conventions, respectively, at the same time, and the Republican National Convention immediately responded to us. Didn’t try and edit any of our messages… My rank-and-file members, who have been lifelong Democrats, are not happy about it,” O’Brien stated.
