On Wednesday night, the House of Representatives approved the continuing resolution to reopen the government after 43 days.
On October 1st, the government officially ran out of funding for what they deem “non-essential” services and welfare programs. The shut down was caused by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and the democrats after they refused to pass the continuing resolution to fund the government.
According to Speaker Johnson, the legislation proposed is the “same” resolution that was approved 13 times in the Biden Administration. Once the Democrats began to filibuster, fingers were being pointed across the aisle claiming GOP responsibility for the shutdown.
After about 40 days, eight senate democrats broke with party lines and voted to invoke cloture to call the bill to a vote and pass it over to the House. Of those Senators, the most notable is John Fetterman (R-PA), who has been outspoken about the direction of his party. Of the Wisconsin Delegation, Senator Tammy Baldwin voted against the legislation and Senator Ron Johnson voted yes. Johnson has also been looking to introduce legislation to prevent the consequences of shutdowns in the future. Johnson has been joined by multiple other senators to support a bill that would continue to pay workers when a shutdown occurs.
The only two nay’s on the continuing resolution were from the Democratic delegation, Representative Moore (D-WI) and Representative Pocan (D-WI). The rest of the Wisconsin Delegation, all Republican, voted to pass the resolution. (RELATED: Tiffany Wants to End Wisconsin’s Woke & Broke Business Climate)
Some Representatives like Derrick Van Orden, drove across the country on his Harley to make the vote on time. Van Orden was commemorated by Harley for his “Ride to Reopen” which was over 950 miles.
