While the White House has sent some mixed signals about its deportation policies in recent weeks, the Trump administration made clear that amnesty for illegal immigrants is off the table after Congresswoman Maria Salazar (R-Fl.) introduced the DIGNITY Act last week.
The bill would allow illegal immigrants to reside in the United States legally under a ‘Dignity Program’ where they would have to show good behavior and pay restitution, and could result in them being given de facto permanent legal status that is renewable every seven years.
The bill, which is mostly supported by Democrats but includes support from a small number of other moderate Republicans such as Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), received immediate backlash from grassroots conservatives.
While the bill could pass the House if all ten Republican co-sponsors sign it, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated that the Trump administration would not support the bill. (RELATED: Budget to Bring Major Tax Relief to Middle Class Wisconsinites)
“From my understanding, the White House nor the president has actually read through this legislation, but the president has made it very clear he will not support amnesty for illegal aliens in any way.”
While the Trump administration has made clear that no illegal immigrant is exempt from deportation, President Trump has floated a ‘temporary pass’ for illegal immigrants in certain industries to ease the burden of mass deportations.
The idea was not well received by some conservatives, with some posting ‘No Amnesty!’ graphics on social media. “MAGA is always on amnesty watch. It will not move forward no matter what name anyone tries to call it. They all have to go home,” conservative media figure Jack Posobiec told Axios.
