Door County Supervisor Ryan Shaw is seeking another term in District 9, but his support for Pride recognition has placed him at the center of Wisconsin’s broader debate over LGBTQ policies in schools.
Shaw represents parts of Sturgeon Bay, and sits on county committees including Health & Human Services and Judiciary & Public Safety.
Shaw was amongst the supervisors who voted to allow discussion of an LGBTQ proclamation tied to Open Door Pride Month in 2024. The supporters argued the county should consider the “recognition language.” “Pride Month is a way to support diversity, inclusivity and acceptance,” said Vinni Chomeau, a Door County supervisor. Shaw was listed among those voting in favor of putting the proclamation discussion on the committee’s official agenda.
In 2025, Shaw criticized the board for trying to “push this issue aside” and said he urged members to openly address the conflict.
The LGBTQ policies in schools have become hot button issues in Wisconsin as families have had to deal with the undermining of their children’s private spaces. (RELATED: Wisconsin Assembly Passes Bills on Financial Aid, Free Speech, and Gender Care Lawsuits)
Parents in the New Richmond school district raised concerns after learning a biologically male student was allowed to use girls’ locker room facilities. Administrators said that state and federal law constrained the district’s options. The district’s policy frames their “nondiscrimination policies” to include protection for children who suffer from gender identity and sexual orientation conflicts.
Litigation involving the Mukwonago school district, which included a policy that required students to use restrooms and locker rooms based on sex assigned at birth. Which included a court process that reset after a development related to the Supreme Court.
Shaw’s social media posts show him with his children at pride parades, including his own child holding a LGBT pride flag. These cases show why a county supervisor’s position on pride recognition can be pulled into a statewide argument where these issues have been top of the docket for many parents.
