The Green Bay Packers brought back a familiar face as it signed veteran cornerback Corey Ballentine.

The Packers had originally opted to let Ballentine depart from the team in hopes of finding a cheaper reserve but the 29-year-old was released by the Indianapolis Colts on Aug. 1 which opened the door for a return.

Ballentine signed a one year $1.3 million deal joining the Colts back in March.

In free agency, the Packers made an emphasis on adding depth to the cornerback room, signing Nate Hobbs, Gregory Junior and Isaiah Dunn to replace Ballentine, Eric Stokes and Robert Rochell who opted to leave.

However, the Packers ultimately parted ways with Junior, making space for Ballentine.

The six-year NFL veteran originally entered the league back in 2019 and eventually made his way to Green Bay in 2022 after stops with the New York Giants, New York Jets and Detroit Lions.

During his second season with the Packers in 2023, Ballentine started six games recording 43 tackles, seven pass deflections and an interception. (RELATED: Packers Reach Deal with Rookie Anthony Belton)

But last season, Ballentine mainly served as a special teams player while playing in just 8% of the team’s total defensive snaps that year.

With his return, Ballentine will likely serve as depth as Hobbs has been dealing with a knee issue which general manager Brian Gutekunst believes could take a few weeks to heal.

In the meantime, head coach Matt LaFleur is excited to bring back Ballentine to the Packers.

“(He’s) a guy that’s got experience and knows our system not only on defense but on ‘we-fense’,” LaFleur said according to ESPN. “Really excited to see him.”

Along with Ballentine, the Packers cornerback room consists of Carrington Valentine, Bo Melton, Kalen King, Kamal Kaden and rookie Micah Robinson who will all be competing to fill the void left by Hobbs. (RELATED: Appleton Native Traded to the Brewers in the First Major Deadline Move For the Crew)
